MATHEMATICS PARALLEL MAT PROGRAMME

We at Ysgol Rhiwabon are proud to help and encourage students to achieve their potential.  We like to enable students to discover and learn new mathematical concepts, as well as increasing and developing their mathematical ability.

If your son/daughter has been identified as being More Able and Talented (MAT) within our Mathematics subject, we have signed up to a programme where your child will be given a weekly Maths task to complete.  The aim is to promote and motivate in our subject.

Dr Simon Singh, author of the No. 1 bestseller ‘Fermat’s Last Theorem’ and ‘The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets’ has created a set of weekly maths challenges – just 15 minutes of interesting, fun and challenging material that goes beyond school maths: mystery and history, activities and oddities, puzzles and problems.

In order to access these challenges, Students need to create an account on www.parallel.org.uk

  • Students should sign up and create an account using the teacher code tejx1x
  • We issue a new Parallelogram each Thursday at 3pm, and students are encouraged to complete it by Sunday evening, or before the next Parallelogram is released the following Thursday.
  • The Parallelogram is marked and the score is returned to the student, along with access to the answer sheet. Going through the answer sheet is probably even more important than going through the question sheet.
  • Crucially, please stress to your child that getting answers wrong does not matter – it is an opportunity to learn something. Moreover, the Parallelograms are designed to include new and challenging material, and we would not be doing our job if every student was getting 100%.

The Mathematics department will be able to monitor all the challenges that are completed and achievement points will be awarded to students who complete the challenges on a weekly basis.
