Welsh Government have confirmed the expansion of free school meals to all secondary school pupils whose parent or guardian receives Universal Credit regardless of the level of earnings they receive.
This expansion will start with pupils entering years 7 and 8 on 1 September 2026.
Parents can apply for this provision now, however this will not be in place for the start of the academic year.
Families with Universal Credit and earnings below the annual net earnings threshold of £7400 will be eligible to claim:
- free school meals
- school essentials grant
Families with Universal Credit and earnings above the annual net earnings threshold of £7400 will be eligible to claim:
- free school meals only for year 7 and 8 pupils
Who is eligible?
You could be entitled to free school meals and/or school essentials grant if you receive:
- Guaranteed Element of State Pension Credit
- National Asylum Seekers Support Benefit
- Universal Credit household annual income less than £7400
If you have already received an e-mail to say that you are eligible under the expanded free school meals scheme no further action is required.
If you are eligible under the expanded free school meal scheme this will be for the academic year and is reviewed annually.
