For the past week Ysgol Rhiwabon has partnered with the University of Chester, to benefit from four students from Linkoping University in Sweden, who are students studying to be secondary teachers and are undertaking a module on ‘Teaching Youth Literature’.
Part of their study involves taking literary classes in a British school and then presenting their experiences to the University of Chester.
During the time at Ysgol Rhiwabon, the students taught texts from Norse Mythology Retold from the Eddas (Mabie); Midwinterblood (Sedgwick), Eight Days of Luke(Wynne Jones) and The Magician’s Nephew (Lewis) across a wide range of Year 7 classes at the school.
Mr Tom Mallen, Curriculum Leader for English said,
‘I was excited to get involved in this project as it offers our students something completely different and exposes them to a much wider literary culture. The Swedish students were fantastic here and our students loved every minute they had in class with them’.
Mrs Melanie Ferron-Evans, Headteacher said,
‘I was extremely proud when Tom arranged for the project in our school, we are delighted to be working with the University of Chester ‘.
