Youth Access is a group formed of up to six young people. They work on key skills and challenges that are more vocational than the formal curriculum. The work entails an informal approach and the young people are key in designing the format of work. They will achieve either Bronze/Silver ASDAN awards at the end of yr 11 or if committed, will achieve Level 1/2 CoPE qualification (Equivalent to E/B GCSE.)
The FOCUS group is a group formed of up to ten young people. The Work entails the same informal approach used in Youth Access and the same awards can be achieved. The FOCUS group work also involves building social skills and confidence levels. Year 9 transition students have five weeks of introductory sessions to prepare them for joining one of the groups when they enter year 10. This year the sessions were:- Week 1: Mask made from modrock-All about 'Myself'. Young people to design masks that related to elements of their life and their likes/dislikes Week 2: Relationships session-Young people to draw what they see as positive relationships and negative relationships, discussion based work to follow. Week 3: Using art materials to work on the masks Week 4:Rock climbing at Nantyr Week 5:'Thinking skills' Wide range of thinking skills games used/Evaluation A gallery of year 10 pupils engaged in team-building activities at Nantyr country park can be seen here. |
