Drapers’ Company Technical textiles Competition
On the 22nd of November, the year 11 triple science group (with Mr Leather) went to the award ceremony for the Technical textiles competition which we had entered last term.
Our idea was a rope with conductive polymers running through it, this would allow the safety of the rope to be tested by checking the conductivity of the fibres. We did this as we had been influenced by the image of a climber on the poster for technical textiles placed around the school.
At 8am we gathered in the school foyer and went on the bus to London, after a traffic jam, congestion, and a stop off in services to get changed, we arrived in Drapers’ Hall (where the King’s Speech and parts of James Bond had been filmed).
After we had set up our display area we were shown to the Great Hall to have a run through of the ceremony (which involved lots of shaking hands ). We had about an hour round London, luckily we were by some famous sights; some of us saw the Bank of England, The Gherkin and Jamie Oliver’s
restaurant.
When we returned to the Drapers’ Hall all sorts of important people visited our display and we told them about our idea. One university professor nearly achieved the impossible, making Conrad struggle for words!
Then it was time for the awards ceremony, which included a lot of speeches. We were placed third in the UK, also being the best in Wales and best group ( the only group in the history of the competition to make the final!)
We had a great day and were proud to represent not just the school, but Wales.
