Courses - Key Stage 5 - Years 12 and 13 |
| Geography can be studied for one year at AS or two years at A level. The course is modular and consists of six units of study. Three units are studied for AS and three units for A level. Topics studied at GCSE are a good preparation for the A level course and the course contains elements of both physical and human geography. There will be opportunities for investigative work during the course, eg in Year 12 students complete a fieldwork report on the effects of deciduous and coniferous woodlands on microclimate. Students also visit Cardiff (as an example of a changing urban environment) and Beddgelert (issues facing the Snowdonia National Park ) In Year 13 students complete a personal enquiry which is worth 15% of the total marks. AS Level Unit 1 Physical Environments - tectonic processes, drainage basins, small scale ecosystems. Unit 2 Human Environments - population, rural change, changing urban environment. Unit 3 Investigative Geography - fieldwork report. A2 Level Unit 4 Geographical processes and their management - two options:-
Unit 6 Individual Investigation. AS Level Units 1 and 2 will be assessed through data response questions and essay questions, based on diagrams, maps and photographs. Unit 3 is a 2000 word report of a fieldwork investigation. A1 Level Unit 4 is assessed by essays whilst Unit 5 is assessed by an essay and a decision-making exercise. Unit 6 is a personal enquiry of 3500 words. The course provides opportunities for the application of all the key skills:
