Courses - Key Stage 4 - Years 10 and 11

The syllabus gives students the opportunity to develop an interest and enjoyment of the subject. It also incorporates a variety of approaches to Geography:- issues, themes, place, systems, enquiry, including those that provide evidence for Key Skills.

Syllabus Content
The content of the syllabus is divided into two units, each of which is divided into three topics:-
  1. The Fragile World
    1. Ice, rivers and the sea.
    2. Weather and climate.
    3. Towards sustainable development of the environment.


  2. The Interdependent World

    1. Economic activities and their consequences.
    2. The influence of economic and social change on urban development
    3. Global citizenship and interdependence.
Assessment
Students will sit two examination papers (worth 75% of the total marks) and complete an internal assessment (coursework).
  1. Paper 1 - assesses Unit 1 in the syllabus.
  2. Paper 2 - assesses Unit 2 in the syllabus.
  3. Coursework - an investigation involving fieldwork and secondary data which is worth 25% of the total marks.

Each paper has two tiers:-
      Higher Tier - grades A* - D
      Foundation Tier - grades C - G

Candidates enter for a single tier and take both Paper 1 and Paper 2 for that tier.


INVESTIGATIVE WORK
Students in Year 11 visit Llandudno and choose one of four topics for their GCSE coursework - scree slope, beach, retailing, tourism.
