Courses Key Stage 3 - Years 7-9

The following courses and units are studied:-

YEAR 7: Geography is taught in mixed ability groups. Pupils begin with a bridging unit. "Introduction to Geography" which looks at geographical skills, such as using OS maps and atlases. The following topics are then studied:- Wales , Settlement, Rivers and Coasts.

YEAR 8: Geography is taught in ability groups. Pupils study the following topics:- Weather and Climate, Economic Activities, Resource issues. France as an example of a country in the European Union, Population.

YEAR 9: Geography is taught in ability groups. Pupils study the following topics: Ecosystems, Brazil as an example of a less economically developed country. Earthquakes and Volcanoes, Environmental issues and change.

INVESTIGATIVE WORK
Pupils are given opportunities during each school year to undertake investigative work in Geography, eg Y7 pupils visit a local river, Y8 pupils study the microclimate of the school, Y9 pupils investigate the Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004.

COMMON REQUIREMENTS
Opportunities are provided for pupils to develop and apply the following common requirements through their study of Geography.

WALES CURRICULUM 2008
The National Curriculum in Geography has recently been revised. The main changes to the current (2000) order are:
  1. The programme of study at Key Stage 3 has been reorganised. There are four groups of geographical skills :
    • Locating places, environments and patterns.
    • Understanding places, environments and processes.
    • Investigating.
    • Communicating.
  2. The content of Key Stage 3 has been reduced and updated. The current requirement to study three places and ten themes has been replaced by nine topics .
  3. A requirement to investigate ' geography in the news ' is introduced to encourage pupils to understand how geography is relevant to their everyday lives.
