ECO-SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING
HELD 16TH NOVEMBER 2009

1 .Eco update
Mr Phillips
welcomed all present to the first Eco-school committee meeting of the school year. He provided a summary of the work undertaken by the Committee which has resulted in the school securing the Bronze and Silver Awards. The focus for this school year is on applying for the Green Flag Award.

2. Green Flag – Criteria check List :
Each tutor group and member of staff had received a copy of the ‘Eco-Schools’ criteria check list’ for Green Flag status on 11th November 2009. Feedback was received on each of the seven areas:-
  • Eco-Committee
    Members of the Eco-Committee are elected at the beginning of the Autumn Term. Minutes of meetings are displayed on the Eco-School noticeboard and are on the school’s website.
  • Action:
    • Students to nominate adult members to serve on the Eco-Committee, eg local councillors, local companies.
    • Students to report on meetings to tutor groups.


  • The Environmental Review
    An environmental review of the school was undertaken after the Eco-committee was formed in 2007.
  • Action
    •Environmental review to be undertaken in the Spring term 2010.
    • Mr Phillips to contact Mr Evans (Business Manger) regarding findings from external auditors.

  • Action Plan
    Members of the Eco-Committee have taken responsibility for leading on some action areas, eg devising Eco-Code and the Energy saving notice. Callum Edwards (Y12) represents the school at meetings of Ruabon Community Council.
  • Action
    • Eco-Committee to identify and prioritise targets for 2010.

  • Monitoring action and evaluating progress
    Number of projects undertaken in conjunction with Groundwork and Youth Service, eg improvement to school grounds – flower beds and tubs.
  • Action
    • Data collection and monitoring to be carried out by the Eco-Committee, eg litter.

  • Linking to the Curriculum
    Issues surrounding sustainable development are explored through curriculum activities in many year groups, eg Y7 CCF days, Geography KS3/4/5.
  • Action
    Audit to be undertaken which identifies where environmental issues are studied across the curriculum.

  • Involving the whole school and the wider community
    Eco-School activities are displayed on the noticeboard on the English corridor and posted on the school website. The school has engaged in activities which involve the local community, eg Y9 Eco Day.
  • Action
    •Eco-Committee to write a termly update for the school newsletter.

  • Eco-code
    An Eco-code has been devised for the whole school and is displayed in each teaching room and office.
  • Action
    • Eco-code to be reviewed during Spring Term 2010.

3. Cross Curricular Focus Day -
Year 7 students took part in their first CCF Day on Monday 9th November. The day was called “Talking Rubbish” and involved a presentation by Caroline Pollitt (Environmental Education Officer, WCBC), group presentations on “Why bother with waste?” and an afternoon of action in which the four tutor groups cleaned up areas within the catchment area of Ysgol Rhiwabon.

4. ESDGC Quality Circle Meeting
Mr Phillips will be attending the first ESDGC Quality Circle meeting on Thursday 19th November.
Action:
• Mr Phillips to feedback at the next Eco-School meeting.

5. ESDGC Audit
Action
ESDGC audit to be undertaken by members of the Eco-Committee.

6. Future events:
25/1/10 Year 12/13 Assembly to be taken by Mr Phillips – “Politics of Sustainable Development”.
  • 24/2/10 Y7 students to visit the “Waste and Recycling Education Centre” and the “Millenium Ecocentre”; this will be their second CCF day.

  • 11/3/10 Y12 students to participate in the CEWC – Cymru Model UN Climate Change Conference, County Hall, Mold.

  • 24/3/10 Welsh Youth Eco-Forum 2010 – three members of the Eco- Committee to attend this event at the National Assembly in Cardiff.

  • April 2010 Eco-Committee members to visit the “Waste and Recycling Education Centre”
