Biology Revision: AS
topic outlines for Mr Jenkins
MODULE 1 |
MODULE BYB1 - Core Principles
Section |
Time |
| 10.4 – organisms exchange materials with their environment. |
Approx. 6 lessons |
Learning Objectives
- As the size of the organism increases, its SA : Volume
ratio decreases.
- To efficiently exchange materials large animals develop
systems to facilitate exchange
- To state the structure, location and adaptation to function
of exchange surfaces in 1) mammals, 2) bony fish &
3) dicotyledonous plant leaves.
- To recall the ventilation mechanisms for each of the
above, so that a concentration gradient is maintained.

MODULE BYB1 - Core Principles
Section |
Time |
10.5 – Enzymes
see 10.1 – proteins for background |
Approx. 5 ½ |
Learning Objectives
- Enzymes are biological catalysts that lower the activation
energy for a reaction.
- Enzymes work by forming an enzyme-substrate complex.
- Properties of enzymes in relation to their tertiary
structure – affects of 1) pH, 2) substrate concentration,
3) competitive inhibitors & 4) non-competitive inhibitors.

see 10.3 plasma membrane for background |
Approx. 7 |
Learning Objectives
- How saprophytic fungus feed.
- Use of starch-agar plates for carbohydrase assays.
- Structure / function of gut wall from the oesophagus
through to the ileum.
- The sites of production of digestive enzymes and associated
secretions.
